Dr. Jane Williams, D.M.A.
Dr. Williams holds degrees in saxophone performance and pedagogy. She earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts and Master of Arts at the University of Iowa. Her Bachelor of Arts is from Montana State University-Billings. Dr. Williams is the saxophone professor at Boise State University. She is also the studio coordinator and program director at Dunkley Music.
Prior to moving to Idaho, Dr. Williams was a Senior Lecturer in Music at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and an Applied Music Associate at Grinnell College, in Grinnell Iowa. She was a certified judge for the Iowa All-State band, and a certified adjudicator for the Iowa High School Music Association. During her time as a student, she performed in a variety of concert, chamber and jazz ensembles.
As a member of the University Saxophone quartet, she was honored to advance to the Music Teacher’s National Association national chamber music competition. She played lead alto saxophone in the New Venue Big Band for 12 years and played regularly with the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. As the owner of the J. Williams Saxophone Studio, her students were well-known for placing in the Iowa All-State Band for sixteen years in a row, and for winning places in multiple regional honor bands and honor jazz ensembles. Her students held the highest chair placements in their school ensembles. Two students have been featured on the National Public Radio show, “From the Top.”
In Boise, her students hold top chairs and are section leaders. They have earned places in the Boise City honor band, and since 2013, her students have been represented at the Idaho All-State Band. In 2017, her student won the Meridian Symphony Youth competition and was a featured soloist on the Young Artist Program. In 2018, her student traveled to Carnegie Hall after winning an audition to be a part of the Honors Performance Series. In 2019, two students were selected to perform at the All-Northwest Honor Band.
Though her students have gone on to a wide variety of careers, most of them continue to play in college and beyond. Those who continued in music have gone on to win places in major saxophone studios at Northwestern University, University of Minnesota, University of Iowa, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Whitewater-Wisconsin, University of Northern Iowa and many more. Former students can be found teaching music, studying in master’s and doctoral programs, composing, directing, and performing throughout the country. Her students have won many scholarships to help with college tuition. Jane can be seen playing with the Kings of Swing and the Treasure Valley Concert Band. She also performed a solo recital in 2014 as a featured artist at the Boise Tuesday Musicale monthly meeting and was honored to play in two concerts with the Boise Philharmonic. She looks forward to collaborating with local artists throughout the year.
