Lorie Marmon Scherer
Lorie Marmon Scherer is a founding member and is principal cellist of the Meridian Symphony, a position she’s held since its inception in 1991. She was that orchestra’s featured soloist in 1999 performing the Lalo Cello Concerto. An Idaho native, Lorie began her cello studies at the age of 10 in Caldwell’s school string program. Soon progressing to private study, she briefly worked with Virginia Cockrum and Catherine Bieler. As a high school sophomore, she joined the Boise Philharmonic, becoming the youngest member of the orchestra. She spent nine years with them under the direction of Daniel Stern. In 1976, Ms. Scherer was a scholarship student at the prestigious Snowbird Music Camp in Utah. The following year, she spent working continuously to expand her repertoire, technique and musicianship and collaborating in performance and study with other professional musicians. As an active player of chamber music, she formed (with pianist Linda Cope in 1993) the chamber ensemble Willow. In 1996 Scherer and Cope had the honor of being invited to perform the Rachmaninoff cello sonata in recital with world renowned Russian pianist Alexander Peskanov. Lorie is also a member of the Boise Baroque Chamber Orchestra which was started in 2003. She held the principal position until 2015.
Lorie recently completed two years of study at Boise State University pursuing a music education degree and is currently studying cello with Dr. Brian Hodges and performing with the BSU Symphony.
Lorie has maintained HollowWood cello studio in Caldwell for 20 years and teaches beginning and intermediate students. She has performed for many local groups including Hymns of Thanksgiving, Opera Idaho, and various events in the valley. In addition, she owns the printing company Treasure Craft Decals which was formed by her father, Loren Marmon, in 1953. She has been involved in several civic organizations and served as Secretary of the Caldwell Fine Arts board. She is a past member of the Caldwell Kiwanis and Historian for the Meridian Symphony. Other interests include photography and antiques. She and her husband of 40 years reside in Caldwell and have three daughters and eight grandchildren.
